Conference Theme

The ADARA 2020 Breakout Conference theme is:

CHAMP!  Creating Standards of Excellence for
Deaf Mental Health and Related Services

The Learning Center for the Deaf is honored to be hosting the ADARA Breakout Conference on May 4-7, 2020. Are you a therapist? Human Services Provider? School counselor? Clinical director? A Psychologist? Researcher? An ASL interpreter? Interested in mental health/human services/behavioral health? If yes… please join us! The theme of the conference will explore what we mean by “CHAMP” services for Deaf, DeafBlind, Deaf Plus, Late Deafened, and Hard-of-Hearing communities. How do we know we are providing expert care and services for the communities and are also inclusive of the intersectionality of identities found within the communities? CHAMP services are, as yet, undefined. We talk about having “it”, but what is “it”? Where do language expertise, clinical skills, multi-cultural awareness, assessment, treatment and knowledge meet? We want to explore what it means to be a provider within the mental health, behavioral health, and human services. We are also putting an emphasis on language access and when and how we work with American Sign Language interpreters within the domain of mental health, behavioral health, and human services. Participants will walk away with an understanding of what it means to provide “CHAMP”–clinically excellent, linguistically skilled, culturally authentic services to diverse Deaf populations.
